Up bright and early this morning we travel to Castlemaine, the former gold mining town steeped in history. We'll enjoy a morning tea on arrival before boarding the Victorian Goldfields Railway. We wind through the bus and open farm land as we make our way to Maldon.
The railway line is a remnant of the extensive branch line system which served rural Victoria from around 1880 through to the 1970s. The Victorian Goldfields Railway restored the line and a past era has been brought back to life!
Arriving at Maldon station we will disembark and make our way to a local hotel for some country hospitality and a lovely two-course lunch.
Maldon began as a gold rush town in 1854 with the discovery of alluvial gold. It thrived in the gold rush years and, although a lot smaller today, this picturesque town boasts that it is largely unchaged since the 1850s. After lunch we will have some free time to wander the streets and get a real taste for the historic significance of the town, before we board the coach for the trip home.
We return to Melbourne late afternoon.
Note: Departure/return times may vary depending on your departure point.
